THOUGHTS
I think a lot, I can't help it. You'll find out soon
enough.
(normally when doing something mundane)
Emo
Can you ever remember trying to explain something 'current' to a generation that clearly haven't got a clue what you're on about and eventually given up with the comment of 'ahh don't worry about it'? Well if so, then you'll have an understanding of what 'little chris' went through to try and describe 'emo' to Judy Finnigan last week. It was painful, and I bet 1000's of teenagers were sympathising with the little bloke too.
For those slightly unaware, Emo is a genre of music coined around the time of an american band in the early 90's called Sunny Day Real Estate. Due to their heartfelt emotional lyrics which grabbed the attention of many struggling and mixed emotioned teenagers looking for an musical outlet to their 'angst' ridden lives. However, it is a little mysterious how 90% of the listeners today weren't even around when Sunny Day formed, but somehow the genre stayed true and strong and grew to influence modern day bands such as Taking Back Sunday and current media hype-huggers Fall Out Boy.
Ok then… so back to this 'emo' thing. i'm certain adults nationwide are staring at kids in the high street (or even at their own kids) and wondering why they're dripping in black (hair, clothes, eyeliner and nail varnish) and worrying what they did to deserve this 'heavy metal' obsessed freak of nature. Wella hold on there people! —they aren't the spawn of the devil like you think. Its currently very cool indeed to be 'emo'… to be emotional… to be a kid in touch with their emotional side and to be able to express themselves however they feel… whether its just being able to pen a line of poetry without feeling embarrased, or to express their love for someone (opposite or same sexed) and not to feel ashamed. It's something that amazes me, this music has done something incredibly amazing to a generation, right up to the point of young guys proving their 'emo'ness by showing they can kiss another guy and not have a problem with it.
Though you're more likely to find groups of them, writing poems and lyrics and figuring out whos gunna play bass or be the lead singer of their latest angst outlet formation. Emo just happens to be surrounded by distorted guitars and some whining bloke-band that could to the untrained ear, make you think the person is in to heavy metal. But you couldn't be further from the truth.
How do you spot an 'emo kid'? (as they prefer to be known as btw)—well for the untrained the easiest way is to shove 'emo hair' into google images and you'll see the trademark, hairstyle that's almost compulsary for the genre.
So here's to little chris and his hair straighteners and eyeliner and nail polish, and his ability to cry openly if required and to be able to pour his emotions out into his songs. Somehow I don't think the planet has quite heard the last of this guy yet.
